Macular degeneration |
Macular degeneration or ARMD Q. What is macular degeneration? A. Macular degeneration is a condition that generally occurs in the older eye. It is often called AMD, ARMD or Age Related Macular Degeneration. The central portion of the retina (the light sensitive layer at the back of the eye) is called the macula. The macula is responsible for our central vision, the fine detail that we see and our colour vision. As the eye gets older, 'wear and tear' at the macula can cause it to 'deteriorate'. This causes a loss of central vision. However, the peripheral vision will remain intact. Q. What are the symptoms? A. At first you may notice that your vision just isn't as clear as it used to be. You may notice that straight lines appear distorted or wavy. Things like driving, watching television, reading or recognising faces may become more difficult. Eventually, a dull, empty area can develop in the centre of your vision. ![]() A depiction of how a person with ARMD sees the world Q. What should I do? A. Whenever you experience a drop in your vision, the first thing to do is to see your optometrist. You may need nothing more than a change of spectacles. Your optometrist will examine your eyes carefully, looking for any problems. If there are signs of macular degeneration your optometrist may refer you to an eye specialist/ophthalmologist. Q. Is there a treatment? A. There are two main forms of AMD. They are known as 'Wet' or 'Dry'. Wet AMD is more treatable and a new drug to the UK called lucentis has now been licenced through NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) to be supplied on the NHS. For Dry AMD treatment is unfortunately limited but spectacles and magnifiers may be of help in some cases. Q. Can AMD be prevented? A. Yes, it has been shown that the correct vitamin supplements taken regularly can significantly reduce the chances of AMD in later life. The supplements need specific elements and so it is important to but the correct type.
