If you listen to Radio Oxford or BBC radio 2 you may of heard Robert Stanley Opticians being mentioned as the only supplier of monocles in Oxfordshire, worn famously by Sir Partrick Moore and Chris Eubank. It is a common myth that the monocle is uncomfortable as with a correct fitting it can be worn without problems. Monocles were first started to be worn in England around the 1830's, they were quite basic and mostly worn by rich upper class men. In the 1890's Monucles had started to get more elaborate with galleries, which were designed to stop the eyelashes Jarring them. These were more comfortable but quite expensive. There is a famous comedy sketch where a rich gentleman is sipping a drink when he is shocked so raises an eyebrow, when his monocle falls out and lands in his glass causing his drink to splash on his companion. Obviously in this day and age they are better made and have to be fitted correctly to the wearers eye so (hopefully) that would not happen. ![]() Give us a call now to find out more 01235 520849 Thank you Becky Gills - Optical Assistant |
