New variant CJD
Many contact lens patients have contacted us regarding new variant CJD, we have included this page to give a brief overview of the issue, if you are in any doubt, or are worried we advise you contact your optician who should be more than happy to advise you further
It is considered theoretically possible that new variant CJD can be transmitted from patient to patient (through protein deposits) on the lenses used in contact lens trials, and other medical instruments. As a precaution the Department of Health has issued a guideline to all practitioners in the UK. To summarise practitioners, opticians and hospitals have been told not to re-use contact lenses after a trial
Robert Stanley Opticians never re-use any contact lenses used on patients, or those used for training purposes. They are discarded after each use.
