Various substances taken into the body, can produce a red eye.  Marajuana, for example has a secondary effect of dilating the blood vessels throughout the body, causing the white of the eye to go red

Drug reaction

Many drugs taken systemically have a side effect of causing the blood vessels to dilate and therefore the white of the eye looks red
